Windsurfing: West Mersea Wind Direction: W Wind Stength: F3/4 Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: hot Sea Temperature: warm Weather: sunny Max Speed: 21.54 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 14.3 (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Had planned to sail at Felixstowe or Levington but text from Ian to go
Mersea (prob 30 miles away) was too tempting. Didn't get there till 5.30
and the breeze was stiff, with several sailors tanking it across to power
station, on the other side.
Started rigging 8.5 Gaastra Savage when a couple of sailors said I would be
over powered. Faffed and measure the wind which was 14kts top limit of the
sail so stayed with it as water was like a pancake. Carpark closed at 8pm
so had to do a 30 min rig time which is fast for me, but by the time I
rigged the poxy wind eased. The JP146 ride pro is a floaty board, so had to
release the adjustable outhaul fully on the water (nearly fell in!) to
start planning. The wind was prob 2 knots less than I need. Luckily it
kicked in again and had some great runs, not flat out but planning
comfortably. Ian was flying all over the place he is so light aaarrrggghhh!
The guys at old Mersea, were tanking it, near the boardwalk, so started the
beat up there. Spent a lot of time on a planning beat so did no speed
runs. So as I got to old Mersea had one run and the wind died there and the
guys down the kite zone were planning hard! The wind was up and down, but
was planning quite a lot. I am definitely a flat water bitch. Love it.
After sailing a couple of hours with an injured knee, I could have sailed
all day. 20 minutes in the Felixstowe chop and am *ucked. Speeds were poor
20 knots in the apparent wind of 10/12kts was OK though. Had a final burn
up with Ian on the last run of the day, (Ian reminded me the gates would
close if we hung around). Straight race across to the other side. As always
lightweight Ian blasted off and pulled out a 25 metre lead, but as the wind
freshened a little I started to reel him in, and we were dead even on the
other side. We clocked 21.54kts which was best of the evening.
Again he left me for dead on the gybe (we both stayed on deck) but couldn't
catch him as the wind eased yet again. Nice evening sail, which I lived at
Mersea, the venue is great, lovely grass rigging area in the carpark, next
to the beach, and only £2 for 3 hours parking.
